March TBR Linkup!

How is this year flying by so quickly?! It seemed like January was a whole decade in itself, and next thing I know we’re in March. The fact that I’m over halfway done with my pregnancy probably isn’t helping the time slow down either! Anyway, time is a construct, so let’s get on with what I’m super excited to be reading in March 2020. 🙂

#1 The Muse by Jessie Burton

The cover is gorgeous, so I don’t mind showing it to you twice.

…I know. This one was on February’s TBR list. With baby prep, career exploration, and my husband being away for training for his new job, life has been hectic (but also awesome). I’ll spare you from the summary here, but if you want to read it, check out my February 2020 TBR Linkup post!

#2 Gwendy’s Button Box by Stephen King & Richard Chizmar (Illustrated by Keith Minnion)

I’m a person who HATES picking favorites. I just can’t do it. However, if you ask me for my favorite author, my default answer is Stephen King. I’m not typically a horror fan, but I admire the effortless, conversational style his writing takes in (most of) his novels. He’s iconic.

Gwendy’s Button Box is the first of a trilogy where Gwendy, a preteen girl struggling with body image issues, comes upon upon a box. Turns out, this box is magic and will grant her wishes…at a dire cost.

I am so into the idea of a Stephen King meets Aesop’s fables type of story, so I cannot wait to devour this one and report back! The book is fairly short, and I don’t think I’m in for heavy plot elements or lengthy descriptions (as King is wont to do). My expectation is that this read will be short, simple, and weird in the best way. We shall see!

#3 We Unleash the Merciless Storm by Tehlor Kay Mejia

We Unleash the Merciless Storm is the sequel to We Set the Dark on Fire, and if it’s anything like the first book, it’s going to be awesome. Tehlor Kay Mejia’s storytelling abilities are top-notch, and the dystopian story contains very compelling commentary on modern U.S. immigration issues.

In the fictional world of Medio, each husband has two wives. Women are trained to serve one of two wifely roles–that of the primera (the brains) or the segunda (the beauty). After graduating from school, Daniela and Carmen are chosen as the primera and segunda respectively of the soon-to-be-leader of Medio. Their high-ranking positions teach them a lot about the state of their country–and about each other. The relationships among the three become more and more complex as the girls learn more and more about their husband’s role in Medio.

The first book ended on a nail-biting cliffhanger, so I’m absolutely dying to see where the story goes. The characters are complex and interesting, though they give very evident “prince and the pauper” duality. I’ve no doubts that this book will not disappoint, and I easily consider it the book I’m most excited to read this month and even this year.
